Beaten by Old Asian Couples

On Saturday Bryan and I decided to go for a hike. Which is exciting in many ways. We NEVER hiked in SF. We walked our butts off but never hiked. And it's beautiful here, and 5 minutes from our house. So we get our Oahu hiking book and don our tennis shoes. And we hike.

We like to think we're in shape and active. We congratulate ourselves when we go the beach and eat papayas for breakfast. I thought I was a true rockstar when I was paddling three days a week. But we are wimps. Case in point:

We're trudging up this steep and very beautiful path, both soaked in sweat (super gross) and huffing our breaths. I even had to stop and sit down sometimes (but to be fair I hadn't eaten much that day). At one point I say "how far have we gone? It must be a mile right?" and Bryan replies with "Oh yeah, definitely a mile we've probably climbed over 500 feet." We get to the top of the trail and learn the whole thing is only .7 miles and a 700+ feet climb. Wimps. Then we turn around, still sweaty and wheezing, to carefully step our way down the steep and uneven path. There we encounter two sets of older Asian couples. Definitely close to their 60's, walking briskly up the path and not a bit of sweat as if this trail that nearly killed us is just a stroll in the park. And there's the young (hot) guy with his three dogs who comes RUNNING down behind us. And the fully grey-haired man speed-hiking in his slippers and hand weights. He actually passed us at the end. We got lapped by an old man. A sweaty, smelly old man in slippers.

I also learned a valuable lesson. Bug repellant is necessary. Mosquitos LOVE me. They love to bite me, suck my blood and leave me with horribly ugly and itchy red marks. They do not love Bryan. They bypass Bryan and land on me. I swear there must be a lead mosquito at the bottom of the trail who sends little mosquito messages up the path "tasty while girl coming". I must have fed a whole colony. I promise I am not exagerating, I had at least 30 bites. Oddly enough, most on the right side of my body.

Other weekend activities included:
- A Friday night bar stop to say goodbye to my coworker Sora who now leaves me with no one to gossip with at work.
- A pizza.
- A paddling/Hawaiian games bonanza thing where my team won and I ran into clients, coworkers and friends all surprisingly and embarassingly as I hadn't showered and was sweaty from paddling the toughest quarter-mile spring ever.
- Swimming to the Kaimana windsock and back. Bryan's first time ever.
- Maiko's birthday party, a penis cake and way too much pasta.
