Today Hawaii celebrates Admissions Day. I had to ask what it was and then got the funny look I get from long-time residents who think I'm a fool. Admissions Day is the anniversary of Hawaii's admission into the United States. Woohoo! Go Hawaii!
50th state and aren't we all glad! Imagine that flag with just 49 stars. Or imagine Bryan and I moving to a foreign country - unlikely. Imagine needing a passport to come visit us - what a pain. Thank goodness for Admissions Day!
For the record, I think it's the silliest holiday name ever. Reminds me of Secretary's Day. I truly thought it was some tax holiday. Like admit your withholdings, it's Admissions Day!

Just discovered your blog and am enjoying it. I lived in HI for years and like you had a love/hate
relationship, loving HI and missing the mainland. I've been on the mainland for several years now and miss HI every day! Maybe the answer is winning the lottery & being able to split time between the two:-) At least you are getting Target & Whole Foods now!
Thanks, that is really sweet. I am absolutely terrified of missing Hawaii every day once I leave. And I'm equally terrified of not making it back to the mainland. Such a tricky thing this trying new stuff is!
Thank god for Target and Whole Foods. They cannot come fast enough!
Ye, Target will be a little piece of heaven for you now! I believe that living in HI changes you forever and you will take a lot of the Islands with you when you go.I never regret our time there. As far as missing friends, once I realized that if I had moved to a strange city on the mainland and tried to make new friends, it would have taken much longer because people in HI have this "invite everyone" mentality that does not exist here on the mainland:-)Pat yourself on the back for giving it a try, not everyone would!
Hmmm - some folks in Hawaii would be happy if "Admission Day" had never happened.
I'm also a former HI resident, now living vicariously through Blogs like yours:-) Happy to see you are truly taking advantage of the outdoor life there. It's normal to miss friends on the Mainland, but after many years of "travels" I have discovered that your true friends are always there for you, regardless of distance.
