Somehow Bryan and I have managed to hurt ourselves excessively over the last week or so.
He has a mysterious angry bump on his forehead that he can only conclude came from walking into a tree branch (and he doesn't remember that?) and a nasty blister for a multi-hour game of football.
I have at least 5 bruises from banging myself up on the canoe, a skinned knee (also somehow from paddling - weird, huh?), and a boat-caused mysterious owie on the back of my knee that is either going to become a huge bruise or permanent damage.
You'd think paddling would be a pretty straight-forward sport, right? Sit in boat, paddle through water. Nah-ah. I've now gotten to the point in the season where I need to launch myself out of the ocean into the boat - while it's moving towards me and paddles are flying! I also learned last night that one race requires that you sprint (as in run, which I do not do) from the beach to the boat and then paddle like a bat out of hell. What's up with this sport? Like trying to move a 400 pound boat with a big wooden spoon wasn't enough??
Anyhow, amongst other changes, it appears that moving to Hawaii has made us into extreme athletes.

JJ-I recall learning to sail was a similar experience for me. It looked so calm from the beach but it took many years before I mastered the jibe in a heavy wind and did not come away with bumps on my noggin from the boom (thats why they call it boom- when it hits your head) or bruised knees from diving under it. After a while I considered these bruises a badge of honor because I knew I had accomplished something.
Dad
i swear, there is something amiss in the universe this week. on monday i was getting on a bus (very lame, i know!) and dislocated my knee cap. i wish i could explain it with a better story, like sprinting to jump into a canoe or, at the very least, walking into a tree branch(?). ok, maybe not...
miss you guys--maryetta
