You don't go "out of town," you go "off island."
As in: "Oh, sorry I missed your birthday party. I was off island last week."
I love this phrase. I love that it implies that life only happens on the island. That when you leave the island you're completely off the grid.

I wonder how folks "off island" in Hilo feel about that. Kathy, care to comment?
I think we consider the entire island as "where we live" not just the city of Hilo. Where u from? Oh I'm from Big Island...or I'm from Kauai, not just Lihue. We dont just drive to another destination we actually have to leave the rock....So we are "off island" Out of town could mean driving to Pahoa lol I actually dont use the term ( too haole)
