Coffee with Grandpa

This morning I treated myself to a short-week-Starbucks. As I was waiting in line I was struck by a girl (woman?) about my age and a sweet looking older man. She was struggling to make conversation and he was quietly eating his coffee cake. Her drink was almost empty, his black coffee was very full. I smiled and then shamelessly listened to their conversation.

He was her grandfather. He'd come to visit her.

Her: "It's so nice to cook for you. Usually I just heat up a frozen dinner and eat by myself... Thank you for coming to visit me."
Him: "Thank you for inviting me."

And I almost starting crying in Starbucks.

It's been almost 17 years since my Hawaii grandfather died. Even still, I found myself wondering if he would come visit me if he was still alive. He probably would, and we'd probably would have visited Starbucks*.

It's amazing to me that I've lived more than half life without my Hawaii grandpa, and yet his memory struck me so strongly this morning.

*Isn't it awesome that 17 years ago we didn't even consider Starbucks?!

Aww - you made me cry. If he were still here he would have visited you often, taken you to Starbucks and to his favorite Honolulu restaurants (the check would never arrive at the table because he would sneak out and pay it). He would have loved to have you cook for him. And he would have danced with you at your wedding! I am sorry you missed that.

Ok....seriously you two. I'm HORMONAL. I've managed to not cry for 18 straight hours (a recent record) and now I'm weeping. In a good way...but still, crying.

Whew (sigh) Yes, he would have visited you often and not only had coffee at Starbucks with you but a pastry too. And as the sun set he would have a beer with you and Bryan, with peanuts for pupu. He didnt dance with you at your wedding or mine but he was there and his baby blues were smiling!!

Thanks for the memories :D

P.S. Be prepared to have a baby girl when its time...thats all this family has had since grandpa passed.
