Just the Facts

The Honolulu Weekly has some interesting facts about our city. I thought I'd share them for you numbers and facts fans.

The population in 1900 was 39, 306. The population in the mid-40's when my family first came here was roughly 210,000. In the mid-70's when I was born here, it was roughly 345,000. In 2006 when Bryan and I moved here it was 909,863. Today it is over a million. The biggest decade of growth was in the 1980's. Go figure.

20% of Honolulu's population is foreign-born. 45% of those folks were born in the Philippines.

There are 80 congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. There are 52 congregations of the United Church of Christ. And 60 congregations of Buddhism. That's just in Honolulu guys.

The cost of living is 120% higher than the US average. I would love to know how it ranks to California and San Francisco!

In 1927 the first non-stop air flight from the mainland to Honolulu flew.

In 1953 Waikiki sees its first bikinis.

In 1959 Hawaii became a state. Also in that year the large mall was built and the first jet arrived. Huh, perhaps a monumental year?

In 1986 Magnum PI debuts.

In 2006 Bryan rocks his Magnum PI costume.

In the early fifties, when I was a baby, my Mom would walk to Waikiki with my brothers and me to play on a practically empty beach. Now, over fifty years later you surf and "play" on Waikiki beach and it is packed with people. Did they give facts on the increase in the number of tourists over the years?
