Four Months Ago

May 24th, 2009

My friend Leslie stood up, following our toasts and first dances, and introduced the concept of the Jewish Horah. Explaining that in the Jewish tradition it is the guests' duty to entertain the bride and groom to welcome them into a good marriage, she and her husband Mike pulled out a bag of silly decorations. They plopped a plastic pink visor on my head, and hula girl deelie-boppers on Bryan and sat us down in the middle of the dance floor.

Within seconds, all of our friends and family had joined hands in a circle around us and were skipping to the well-known tune of "Hava Nagila."

Decorating themselves and us with plastic lei, they danced, and I squealed with glee. The best that I can describe it was like being in the middle a huge technicolor movie set in the middle of a fairground. There were lights, and music, and smiling faces zooming in and out. Everyone moved in different directions, barely managing not to stumble to the ground. Any way I looked was color and happiness. And lots of love.

At some point someone grabbed our hands, pulled our chairs away, and we joined the dancing, skipping right and then left, in and then out, hands in the air. Happy, happy happy.

And then like a magical scene from a movie there were sparklers!

Someone handed some to us, we sang to each other, and danced.

It was one of the most amazing and happy moments of my life. Completely overwhelming and perfectly beautiful.
